GARLAND, Texas (AP) – Tea Party felt Allen West, a Republican nomination contestant for Texas governor, said on Saturday he received monoclonal antibody injections after being diagnosed with pneumonia in COVID-19.

Antibodies are used to treat people in the early stages of a coronavirus infection.

“My chest x-rays show COVID pneumonia, not serious. I will probably be admitted to the hospital ”, West wrote. “There is a concern about my oxygen saturation levels, which are at 89 and they should be at 95.”

He also said his wife, Angela West, had also tested positive and received monoclonal antibodies. According to his Twitter account, Allen West was not vaccinated against the virus, but his wife did.

Allen West said Thursday he attended an annual “Full House” gala and fundraiser in Seabrook, Texas. On Saturday, he tweeted that he would “suspend events in person until he receives a clear indication.”

West is a former President of the Texas Republican Party and Congressman from Florida. He announced in July that he would challenge Republican Gov. Greg Abbot, who is running for a third term and has been backed by Donald Trump.

West’s announcement came a month after he resigned as chairman of the Texas Republican Party.

West won a United States House seat in Florida in 2010 and quickly became a tea favorite and lightning rod, at one point accusing Democrats of having as many as 80 Communists in their House caucuses. He was not re-elected in 2012.

He then moved to Texas and largely stayed out of the spotlight until he ran for president of the state’s GOP party last year.

West then began to criticize Republicans as much as Democrats, calling the Texas House GOP chairman a “traitor” for working across the aisle, then leading a protest outside Abbott’s mansion against restrictions on coronaviruses.

In October 2020, West participated in a protest outside Abbot’s home, criticizing the Republican governor’s decrees – including a statewide mask mandate and lockdowns due to the coronavirus pandemic. These restrictions are no longer in place.
