WASHINGTON – Nihar Janga, an eighth grade student from Austin, Texas, who had already received an impressive number of awards, took top honors on Wednesday at the 31st National Geographic GeoBee, an elite test of geographic knowledge. .
Janga triumphed in a contest held at the headquarters of the National Geographic Society in Washington. The student from Austin's Canyon Ridge Middle School was also co-champion of the 2016 Scripps National Spelling Bee and was one of the top ten finalists in the GeoBee 2018 competition.
The company also hosted the first ever GeoChallenge national competition, a team competition that called for innovative solutions to modern problems. This year's challenge: plastic pollution in our waterways.
A team from Flushing Christian School in Flushing, NY, took the win by building a model filtration device to remove plastic debris from the Hudson River.
The winning team will receive $ 25,000, plus the support needed to implement their project. Janga will receive a $ 25,000 college scholarship, a lifetime membership at the National Geographic Society and an expedition to the Galapagos Islands aboard National Geographic Endeavor II.
