The Texas sheriff's deputy, who was hit several times from behind while conducting a routine check on Friday afternoon, has died, the police said.

Sandeep Dhaliwal, a 10-year veteran from the Harris County Sheriff's Office, intercepted a vehicle with two people inside at about 1 pm CT.

One of the suspects fired on Dhaliwal "at least twice" from behind, KHOU 11 told Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, calling the act "very ruthless and cold-blooded" ".

The suspect fled and was later arrested by the police, officials said.

Dhaliwal was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital in critical condition; he eventually succumbed to his injuries, reported Fox 26 Houston.

"I'm sad to say with you that we lost one of ours," Gonzalez tweeted Friday. "There are no words to express our sadness … please, keep his family and our agency in your prayers."

Dhaliwal, 41, was the father of three children and the first member of the Sikh community to become a member of Harris County.

The alleged gunman hit a mall in a grocery store, abandoned the vehicle in the parking lot and ran away, officials said.

Gonzalez said just before 3:30 pm CT that a suspect had been arrested.

"We believe [the] the stage is contained and no current threat to [the] "Due to the on-site investigation, the presence of police in the area will remain important, avoid it if possible".

Gonzalez told KHOU that Dhaliwal was "highly respected" and "a leader in every sense of the word".

Texas Governor Greg Abbott said he and his wife were mourning the MP 's loss and conveying their condolences to his family and to law enforcement officials.

"This tragic loss is a serious reminder of the risks our peace officers are exposed to every day," Abbott said in a statement. "I thank the officers who have bravely responded to apprehend the suspect and I assure you that the State of Texas is determined to bring this murderer to justice."
