A van full of suspected illegal immigrants has crashed in South Texas, killing up to 10 people and injuring at least 13, authorities said on Wednesday.

The incident occurred on US 281 in Encino, approximately 55 miles north of the border town of McAllen.

The van had 30 people inside and swerved from the road and crashed into a utility pole, Texas Department of Public Safety Lt. Chris Olivarez told Fox News.

The driver was also killed, he said.

There had been no prosecution at the time of the crash, Olivarez said. Investigators have yet to notify the Mexican consulate and next of kin, he said.
