Texas and Oklahoma have been conference rivals since the Big 12 was formed in 1996. But schools could switch to the SEC after applying for league membership, a senior insider told the Houston Chronicle.

HOOVER, Alabama – A decade after a major conference realignment rocked college football, big changes could once again be on the horizon.
The Big 12’s Texas and Oklahoma have both contacted the Southeastern Conference to potentially join the powerful league, a senior university official with knowledge of the situation said on Wednesday to the Houston Chronicle.
An announcement could come in a few weeks regarding the potential addition of UT and OU to the league, the person said, which would give schools SEC 16 and make it the first of a national super-conference.
Texas A&M left the Big 12 nine years ago this month and, along with Big 12 ex Missouri, gave the SEC 14 teams, which it has since been on. The addition of UT to the SEC would also mean that the Aggies and Longhorns would meet again each year on the football field for the first time since 2011.

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey declined to comment.
“Speculation is swirling around college athletics,” a Texas spokesperson said. “We will not address rumors or speculation.”
Big 12’s television contract with ESPN and Fox expires in 2025.
