A Houston police officer was shot and killed Monday afternoon after entering a hotel parking lot, reports said.

Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo identified the fallen officer as Sgt. Sean Rios, 47, veteran of the department for 25 years. Acevedo said he left behind four children aged 9 to 17.

HPD led an escort for Sgt. Rios which started at Little York Rd at North Interstate Highway 45 under the freeway, then arrived on the service road.

Houston reporter Fox 26 cited sources who said the off-duty officer was shot and killed around 1:30 p.m. in his vehicle after parking in the parking lot on the block from the 7600 hotel in the North Interstate Highway 45. The officer went to the lobby where he died, he said.

Police reportedly closed the intersection of Interstate 45 and the Gulf Freeway. Officers told motorists traveling on I-45 North to “expect delays and use alternate routes.”
