DALLAS – Texas reported 197 more deaths from COVID-19 on Sunday after a steady decline in the number of people hospitalized for the illness caused by the coronavirus.

Texas State Department health departments also reported 2,921 new confirmed cases of the virus and 715 other probable cases on Sunday. The state has reported more than 2.28 million confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic and 42,936 deaths in total.

The actual number of cases is believed to be much higher as many people have not been tested and some who get sick do not have symptoms.

There were 5,696 people hospitalized for COVID-19 in Texas on Saturday, the most recent day for which state data was available. This is a drop of over 1,400 from the previous week.

Over the past week, more than 15% of COVID-19 tests in Texas have come back positive, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. University researchers say Texas has fully immunized more than 6% of its population.

For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms that go away within a few weeks. But for others, especially the elderly and people with health problems, the virus can cause serious illness and be fatal.
