Texas Tech coach Chris Beard on Monday accepted a new contract that will make him one of the highest paid college basketball coaches.
Beard has signed a new six-year contract that will earn him $ 4.575 million a year, keeping him under contract until the end of the 2024-2025 season. His annual salary is now the third highest in the country, behind only John Calipari of Kentucky and Mike Krzyzewski of Duke, according to the USA Today coaching salaries database.

Beard was named National Coach of the Year by AP last season after leading Texas Tech to the national championship game where she bowed to Virginia. Since the Red Raiders were 18-14 years old in Beard's first season in Lubbock, they totaled 58-17 and 8-2 in the NCAA tournament.

Beard had been briefly mentioned with several coach vacancies this spring, but he did not show much interest in leaving Lubbock. Beard spent 10 seasons as Bob Knight's assistant coach at Texas Tech from 2001 to 2011 and returned to this position in 2016.
