Texas vs. Rice: Five questions to Longhorns

Five questions Texas will face on Saturday night against Rice:

1. Which player from the Houston area shines the most in his homecoming?

Texas has engulfed a lot of talent from Houston. In fact, seven of the Longhorns that started last week against LSU were recruited out of the Houston area. Will any of these players have a great match at NRG Stadium? The left tackle Samuel Cosmi went to Humble Atascocita. Linebackers Joseph Ossai and Jeffrey McCulloch are from the region. Cornerback nominees Anthony Cook, Jalen Green and D'Shawn Jamison all reside in Houston.

2. What numbers does Texan quarterback Sam Ehlinger publish against the Owls?

Inside NRG Stadium, Ehlinger lost a league game in the state and guided the Longhorns to a Texas Bowl victory. This weekend, it should be based on a good start to the junior year. Ehlinger already has eight touchdown passes and his 677 passing yards are the most for a quarterback UT in the first two games of the season. Ehlinger, who also has a quick touchdown and no setbacks, should face a defense from Rice that yields 398.5 yards and 27.5 points per game.

3. After the slippage last week, can Texas avoid losing a big game?

Last season, the Texan defense awarded 10 games at least 50 yards. These 10 games – four of which led to defeats – put Texas in the 98th national rank in this category. Texas only allowed one game of 50 yards this fall, but the 61-yard touchdown was the proverbial nail of the LSU defeat coffin last week. So far, Rice's longest match of the season has been the senior Nahshon Ellerbe running against the army on August 30th.

4. Will Cameron Dicker score a long placement?

Against LSU last week, Texas sent second-year scorer Cameron Dicker for a 58-yard field goal. If that had been done, it would have been tied for the fifth longest shot in the history of the school. Texas coach Tom Herman, however, changed his mind after a timeout from the LSU. Herman said this week that Dicker's reach was almost 60 meters and he would be asked to shoot from that distance if a match was in play. Will Dicker have the opportunity to present his leg on the Same scene as the one that earned Michael Dickson the Texas striker to be the most valuable player of the Texas Bowl 2017?

5. How many ways does Texas mark Saturday?

Texas and Rice have played 94 times before, but this will be the first meeting between the two schools since UT's 42-28 win in 2015. In that 14-point conquest, Texas found four different ways to enter in the end zone. The Longhorns scored on a touchdown (Johnathan Gray, D'Onta Foreman), a touchdown (Armanti Foreman, John Burt), a defensive touch (Malik Jefferson) and a punt return (Daje Johnson).
