A US Army sergeant on vacation leave was found fatally shot in Texas, military officials said.

Sgt. Jessica Mitchell – who was assigned to Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston – was found with multiple gunshot wounds around 3 a.m. on New Years Day in a vehicle along Interstate 10 in San Antonio , reported the WTXF news station.

The 30-year-old was found by firefighters responding to a report of vehicle collisions.

The Dodge Challenger Mitchell was discovered in had bullet holes on the driver’s side door and window, the San Antonio Express-News reported.

Mitchell, who had no pulse, was taken to teaching hospital, where she was pronounced dead on Friday, the base said.

“We are devastated by the tragic loss of Drill Sergeant Jessica Mitchell. Our sincere condolences go out to his family and friends, ”Major General Dennis LeMaster said in a statement obtained by Express-News.

“We are working to support Dr Drill Sgt. Mitchell’s family and soldiers during this extremely difficult time.

Mitchell, a dental specialist, had been posted to the U.S. Army Medical Center of Excellence since August 2019 and previously worked at a joint dental clinic, military officials said.

The Army’s Criminal Investigations Division and the San Antonio Police Department have launched an investigation into his shooting death.

Her sister said Mitchell posted at least one post on social media about “ringing the New Year” hours before her body was discovered.

“Why would anyone want to do this?” Why do people commit such heinous criminal acts for no reason? Sister Ashley Mitchell told WTXF.

His death comes just days after the discovery of partial skeletal remains near Salado Creek at the base.

Officials said it was “too premature” to release more details of the find on December 27.

It is not known how a body would end up at the base because it is closed and closed to the public.
