Netflix has ordered “That ’90s Show”, a spin-off of the hit Fox sitcom “That’ 70s Show”, Variety has learned.
Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rupp, who played parents Red and Kitty Forman in the original series, are set to return on “That ’90s Show”. Netflix has ordered 10 episodes of the series, which will be a multi-camera sitcom like the original.
In the new series, it’s 1995 and Leia Forman, daughter of Eric and Donna, visits her grandparents for the summer where she bonds with a new generation of Point Place, WI, children under the Kitty’s watchful eye and Red’s stern gaze.
Original series creators Bonnie Turner and Terry Turner and their daughter Lindsey Turner are on board as screenwriters and executive producers, with “That 70’s Show” alumnus Gregg Mettler also writing in addition to being executive producer and showrunner. . Smith and Rupp will be executive producers in addition to the star. The Carsey-Werner Company’s Marcy Carsey and Tom Werner, who produced the original show, will also produce the follow-up.
“That ’70s Show” debuted on Fox in 1998, spanning eight seasons and 200 episodes. The show served as the first vehicle for actors like Topher Grace, Laura Prepon, Mila Kunis, Danny Masterson, Ashton Kutcher, and Wilmer Valderrama. Along with Rupp and Smith, the rest of the cast also included Don Stark, Tonya Roberts, and Tommy Chong.
This isn’t the first time that a number of “That ’70s Show” stars have come together on Netflix. Masterson and Kutcher would later star in the Netflix comedy series “The Ranch”. Rupp, Smith, and Valderrama all made appearances on the series during its airing.
Rupp is replaced by Artists & Representatives and Wright Entertainment. Smith is replaced by Progressive Artists Agency and Pop Art Management. The Turners are replaced by Gendler & Kelly. Mettler is replaced by UTA and Hansen Jacobson.
