CAMBRIE, Wisconsin – Although the closing of the Del Monte corn packing plant could have been devastating in Cambria, village president Glen Williams said his sale to a new buyer should not be too much trouble. # 39; impact.
Del Monte Foods will close one plant in Mendota, Illinois, and another in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota, parent company Del Monte Pacific Ltd. announced Tuesday. It will sell its Cambria plant at the end of the corn season.
In a village of about 770 residents, Williams estimates that hundreds of seasonal employees work at the Del Monte plant, as well as dozens of full – time employees.
"It's a small community," Williams said. It's just wonderful. Everyone knows everyone. "
When you know everyone, the news goes fast.
"It's nice to know when things are going good or bad, it's good to have a community to share with," Williams said.
Williams is concerned about the closure of the Del Monte plant and is happy to share good news.
"In the last two years, we feared that this would happen – they had to close and disappear and these jobs disappear, the community would suffer a lot," he said. "Discovering that they're selling to a company that wants to keep it going is a wonderful and wonderful thing."
Williams does not know which company buys the plant, and a representative of Del Monte was not able to share it either, but Williams said he was assured that the company Buyer would keep Del Monte's current employees and pursue similar operations rather than close its doors.
"You have the trucking companies that work with the factory, all these people would be out of work." Seasonal workers, full-time workers, the tax base would have been affected, "Williams said. "That would have had a huge impact, so we are very happy to hear that the new company plans to keep it open."
According to the village's website, Del Monte has owned the plant for about 20 years, but has been around for almost a century.
"My father, myself and my brother all worked there to pay for their education," Williams said. "Over the years, the company has employed many full-time workers and is a wonderful member of our community.
A representative of Del Monte stated that current employees of the factory would be eligible for severance pay if they wished.
According to the Wisconsin Manpower Development Department, Del Monte has not received any notice of layoff regarding the Cambria plant.
