If there’s one great story about the 2021 Ohio State team, it’s Thayer Munford. The fifth-year senior wasn’t a five-star prospect like some of his fellow offensive linemen, but he is set to start for the Buckeyes for a fourth straight season. He also became the first member of his family to graduate from college in August, which he promised his mother he would do and the main factor for which he returned to Scarlet and Gray for another season.
Munford’s story improved a lot on Friday. After missing the NFL draft to play for Ohio State again, Munford was named one of six team captains. Voted by his teammates, Munford joined the wide receivers Chris Olave and Kamryn babb, defensive tackle Haskell Garrett, defensive end Zach harrison and linebacker Teradja mitchell as designated leaders of Scarlet and Gray in 2021.
While Munford was certainly proud of his achievement, probably no one was more proud than his mother, Melisa Thompson. Offensive line coach Greg Studrawa Made sure to call Munford’s mother and let her know her son was a captain.
The Ohio State Twitter account posted a video of the call.

Studrawa: The Stud trainer is calling you
Thompson: Oh, hi Stud Coach. How are you?
Studrawa: I am wonderful. I am really wonderful. How are you?
Thompson: I’m fine. I’m fine.
Studrawa: Good good. I’m about to make you a little better. Are you ready for some great news?
Thompson: Oh yeah. Absoutely!
Studrawa: You already know I’m with a college graduate, Mr. Thayer here. But I also wanted to tell you that he got the most votes and was elected captain of our football team this year.
Thompson: No …
Studrawa: Absolutely. He’s the leader of the team and we’re so excited and so proud of him and wanted to make sure we let you know.
Thompson: No way!
Studrawa: Yes.
