The NFL and its owners want a regular season of 18 games. Players do not do it.
NFLPA Executive Director DeMaurice Smith said Friday night after confirming that the league was considering the possibility of a season of 18 games with a maximum limit of 16 games per player.
"I do not see a schedule of 18 games – by any means, be in the best interest of our players," Smith told Cameron Wolfe of ESPN. "If anybody wants to make a proposal for 18 games, we'll look at it. I did not see anything that makes me think it would be good for the players. "
The NFL has long wanted 18 games. The NFLPA has long opposed it.
To reach 18 games, the NFL needs the approval of the NFLPA. This probably means a financial offer that players can not refuse.
Smith, however, sounds as if no amount of money will cause a change of heart of the NFLPA.
"Fans and media are discussing what would happen to notes and revenues or if [18 games] is a good idea or a bad idea, "Smith told ESPN. "For us, it's about who the players are as men and if it's good for us. If a coal miner is willing to spend more time in the hole, will that probably give more money? Yeah. Is it a good thing for him as a person? Probably not. This is the question nobody asks. It's easy to say it's more money. But is it good for us? The answer is no."
Proposal 18/16 left many questions, including the size of teams and how teams would manage players competitively.
"Why is it our job to find out how to make 18 games work like players?" Smith said. "You tell someone you're going to work longer and you know how to make it work?" It does not work. It's not our job to put this square peg into the round hole. "
Josina Anderson of ESPN, said Josina Anderson of the NFL and NFLPA, will continue trading sessions of the CBA next weekend. The current ABC expires after the 2020 season.
