The uncertain times of awards season continue and the Oscars have several storylines planned for their annual show, which has been pushed back two months due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The first details regarding the Oscar ceremony have emerged and there will be an in-person show, not only from the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, but from several locations.
The Academy, like any other Hollywood industry group, has adapted and readjusted its normality almost a year after the lockdowns due to the pandemic. In response to theatrical closures, they have temporarily changed their rules allowing films to qualify through the Academy’s screening room within 60 days of the film’s theatrical, streaming or VOD release.
“In this unique year that has asked so much of so many, the Academy is determined to present Oscars like no other, while prioritizing the public health and safety of all who attend. To create the in-person show that our global audience wants to see, while also adapting to the demands of the pandemic, the ceremony will be broadcast live from multiple locations, including the famous Dolby Theater. We look forward to sharing more details soon, ”an Academy spokesperson said in a statement:
The Oscars are the most watched entertainment event, overtaking the Emmys, Golden Globes and Grammys by comfortable margins. Despite last year’s ratings of a record 23 million viewers, television broadcasting is still the second highest-rated annual event behind the Super Bowl.
The Academy’s pursuit of celebrating cinema this year has been paramount. In the weeks to come, we’ll likely learn that this year has one of the highest numbers of films ever submitted for review. The Oscars previously revealed that the number of submissions for documentary feature films rose from 170 to 238 submissions, a record number, while the international feature film category had 93 countries submitted for a chance at the Golden Statuette, also a historic peak. And after the Academy unveiled its list of Oscar finalists in nine categories, revealing the final 15 countries in the running, a nice swath of diversity was seen among the films listed, including three films from Asia, three from America. Latin and two from Africa, exceeding the number. films from Europe for the first time in Oscar history.
And let’s not forget that we could have the first woman of color named director, multiple female director nominees, and quite possibly the most diverse and inclusive Oscar rosters, in multiple categories, ever put together. However, it should be emphasized; the vote only takes place from March 5 to 9, with nominations scheduled for March 15.
What does this mean for our favorite Hollywood show? As expected, this is going to be very different. The September Emmy was a hybrid event that featured in-person elements with host Jimmy Kimmel and most of the nominees watching the show from their homes via Zoom, but it was the first to release in that format.
There are many ways the show can look both inside Dolby and out into the world. Looking at the implementations built by sports organizations like the NBA, an “Oscar bubble” might indeed be required in one form or another. We could see anything, nominees in the room or part of the ceremony going on outside, maybe at the Hollywood Bowl. An “Emmys 2.0 ceremony” approach with off-site nominee locations could surely work.
Either way, AMPAS is staying the course and saying, “The show must go on.”
The Oscars will be produced by Jesse Collins, Stacey Sher and Steven Soderbergh. No details regarding a host or director have been announced.
