Several awards shows have done a surprisingly good job this year putting on an event that didn’t feel completely ridiculous or unnecessary in the wake of the 2020 horror, but the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has no interest to make the most of a bad situation. He wants to have a Ordinary response to a Ordinary situation, damn it, and that’s exactly what it’s going to do with the Oscars in 2021. After all, the Oscars have already postponed in April, the fourth time that the ceremony has already been postponed, and that’s about as different as the Academy is prepared to do.
According to Variety, an Academy representative said that “an in-person broadcast will take place” and that there will be no Zoom version of the Oscars next year. Seems like no one really knows much beyond that, including how many people will actually be allowed at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles (where the Oscars usually take place) in April, but an anonymous publicist said Variety that the Academy recently took a “virtual tour” of the Dolby Theater “to see all of the multiple options.” April is pretty far away, but it still seems pretty optimistic that everything will be remotely “normal” by then – and that assumes that these promising vaccines actually work – so it will be interesting to see what the Academy comes up with here. Does a host on a stage count all by itself as an in-person show? Would nominees even want to introduce themselves? Does the Academy have enough attraction to get vaccines for every celebrity just to turn the Oscars into a perfect bubble of COVID protection? God, that would be nice. Celebrities are so special.
Whatever they look like, the Oscars will be held on April 25, 2021. The Academy has also already rolled out new, unique rules to allow films that had to go through streaming services to retain the eligibility they would have gotten on theatrical tours in a normal year, so things were going to be a little different even before the the show itself is not postponed.
