After its successful test at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires last October, the organizers of Paris 2024 decided to implement the Summer Games program. In addition to the breakup, Paris 2024 voted for the addition of the skateboarding, climbing and surfing program. (The last three have already been accepted as "extra sports" for Tokyo 2020.) The addition will not be official until the final IOC approval in 2020.

The losers in today's vote were baseball, karate and squash.

It is not surprising that the Parisian organizers would choose to take a break to make their official Olympic debut in their city in 2024. It is quite popular in France. The French B-boys have won Red Bull BC One three times, one of the biggest annual 1-on-1 fights. Only the United States – where the dance was created – has had more winners since 2004, with four. (Korea also has three wins.)

Despite their success, Japan, Russia and Korea welcome and train many of the best boys and girls in the world. The gold medalist B-boy in Buenos Aires came from Russia; the winner on the women's side was from Japan.

Beyond its global popularity, the break is relatively easy to stage. No specialized equipment needed. Just a good floor, chairs for the judges and a good sound system. He can easily share the space with other sports and can take place outside, as in Buenos Aires. There is no need to build an expensive coliseum for a merciless battle.

And since the CIO is your dorky – both rich and powerful – your dad tries to look young and cool, including more youth-oriented events like breaking serves his interests.
