The 30th anniversary of the Game Boy: a celebration in photos

[ad_1]

When our writers began talking about making a feature film for the 30th anniversary of the Game Boy, I immediately realized that I wanted to do this series of photos. I guess the nostalgia factor came into play; this brought back all the memories that I'm sure many of you also share with this device.

I must mention that all this meeting took place in a bar during one of these appetizers after work with the team. A few minutes after the drinks service, we were all searching on eBay for our old accessories: the connecting cable, the Game Boy camera, the external battery and Game Genie came from various places in the United States and around the world. Some, to our surprise, have never even been opened or used.

The centerpiece, an original Game Boy, came from the news editor, Sean Hollister. He was in impeccable condition in a transport trunk some of you may remember or even have somewhere in their attics or basements.

My approach to the photo shoot was to keep things simple. One option was to shoot it as a standard test: show it around the world and photograph it as we do with any other product, such as a new phone or a new laptop. The second was to shoot in studio with a solid color that corresponds to the product. I decided to do both.

For the photo shoot in the studio, I chose purple as the main color. The same shade of purple that you see on the Game Boy brand font at the front of the device. And if I can say it myself, I think the color works pretty well.

The main photo (the first one you'll see below) has been composed of about six other pictures. Each of them had cartridges arranged around the frame in a different position and orientation, which were then aligned and merged into Photoshop. Initially, I had retouched the dust from the inside of the screen, but I came back to revisit these changes, because it seemed to me that it belonged to this place.

I ended up with a wide range of photos that matched the diversity of topics covered throughout the week; from all the strange props to music to emulation. So, to celebrate the Game Boy's birthday more, I decided to put all the pictures together in one place.

Check them out below – meanwhile, I'll grab extra AA batteries (and this bulky battery pack) and Robopon.
