When Tesla first revealed the next-gen Roadster, it boasted insane performance specs. And some people who attended the launch event were able to experience it firsthand. CEO Elon Musk said the Roadster would be a “hardcore slap” for gasoline-powered cars with its 1.9-second time from zero to 60 mph.
Tesla also said the next Roadster will tackle the quarter mile in 8.8 seconds and have a top speed of over 250 mph and a range of 620 miles. However, it turned out that the Roadster, like many future projects from Tesla, had been put down for some time. Instead, Tesla turned its attention to the upcoming Tesla Model S Plaid.
As part of Tesla’s earnings report and yesterday’s conference call, the automaker announced details of the refreshed Model S, as well as the three-engine Plaid and Plaid + powertrains. He said the top-of-the-range Plaid + would hit 60 mph in under 1.99 seconds. His quarter-mile time should be under 9 seconds. As you can see, these numbers are closely aligned with the era of the future Roadster.
So what will differentiate the Tesla Roadster from the Plaid?
Rockets, of course!
When Musk has talked about Roadster rocket boosters in the past, we wondered if this was a joke. Is it even possible? Well, almost anything is possible, but flames coming out of the back of a production car are not likely. Instead, Musk told Jay Leno that the Roadster’s license plate pops up, allowing a blast of air to help propel the car.
After Musk responded to the above tweet, another Twitter member – Tesla owners in Silicon Valley – asked, “Can he fly?” As you can see, Musk replied, “A little”.
Obviously, a few bursts of air in the back of the car won’t send it skyward. However, perhaps aerial feats like those shown in The Dukes of Hazzard would be more realistic. Musk has said in the past that the Roadster will be able to perform “short jumps”.
The base Roadster will start at $ 200,000, although the entry-level model is unlikely to be the one with the aforementioned specs, air thrusters, or the ability to “fly”. Meanwhile, the S Plaid + model costs around $ 140,000.
