(AP) – The administration of Governor Gretchen Whitmer proposes to close Benton Harbor High School in the fall of 2020 and to send students elsewhere in the southwest corner of Michigan.
State Treasurer Rachael Eubanks said: "Sitting and doing nothing is not an option."
In a statement released Friday, the state said the Benton Harbor District had a debt of over $ 16 million and that the students were not doing well. By 2018, only 3% of third-grade students could read at the classroom level and no high school student was considered university-ready in the last five years.
According to Eubanks, the state plan means that students from kindergarten to grade 8 "can acquire the skills they need," while high school students can be on the path to success in local schools or at Lake Michigan College.
The state announced that the school district would be closed or converted into a charter school system if the Benton Harbor School Board did not approve the plan.
