Lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov has reserved his next fight, but has already made sure to cover his bases in case a certain legend wants to come out of retirement for a fight.
Tuesday, after the announcement of the promotion, Nurmagomedov will face Dustin Poirier, holder of the title acting, at UFC 242, director Ali Abdelaziz said ESPN's Brett Okamoto that the booking came with a new UFC contract.
Abdelaziz said that the agreement contained a clause in case Nurmagomedov would fight against the former champion of both divisions, Georges St-Pierre. What this implies is unclear, but it probably means that the financial conditions surrounding a potential superfight between Nurmagomedov and St Peter's could be renegotiated.
St-Pierre (26-2 MMA, 20-2 UFC) retired earlier this year, but not before trying to negotiate a fight with Nurmagomedov (27-0 MMA, 11-0 UFC). However, UFC President Dana White did not stick to this idea. Nurmagomedov, who had originally called for a Battle of St. Peter's after UFC 223 in April 2018, attempted to reconsider St. Peter's when he proposed to fight him at light weight or at a weight of 160 books later this year, but St-Pierre followed with his retirement.
"It takes three people to fight – both fighters and the organization," St-Pierre said at his retirement press conference. "And that did not happen. I wish the best of luck to Khabib. I am a big fan. I think he's the best fighter at the moment, and I can not wait to see his next fight. "
Nurmagomedov, whose suspension for his role in the UFC 229 brawl expires next month, will unify the 155-pound titles against Poirier at the main event of UFC 242 on Sept. 7 in Abu Dhabi.
