The football team won its second FIFA Women's World Cup in a row by beating the Netherlands 2-0 on Sunday in the match against France. Megan Rapinoe scored a penalty goal in the second half, giving the team a 1-0 lead, and Rose Lavelle added a second score with a shot in the 69th minute.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the parade after the victory.

The parade will begin at 9:30 pm from Battery Park and head north along Broadway to City Hall, according to the Mayor's office. The mayor must also honor the team at City Hall.

The women's team will be treated in the same way as other heroes and winners, such as Nelson Mandela in 1990, the 1969 Mets of the World Series and the New York Giants team who took the Super Bowl XLII in 2008, according to the Alliance for Downtown New York, a trade advocacy, research and information group.

The city's first tape parade took place in 1886, when Wall Street workers spontaneously threw tapes through the window of their offices to celebrate the unveiling of the Statue of Liberty, according to the Archives of Ontario. 39; Alliance.

Since then, the city has hosted more than 200 parades on Broadway, from battery to city hall, according to the alliance. Each parade is marked by a strip of granite along the parade route.

The last tape parade took place in July 2015, after the National Women's Team beat Japan 5-2 to win the World Cup, according to the Alliance records. The team was the first woman to be honored by a parade of tapes at a time.

The US Women's National Team also won the World Cup in 1991 and 1999.
