Forty percent of respondents said they approve of Trump's role as president. The majority – 54% – disagreed while 6% gave no opinion.

Its positive approval rate has remained at 43% in the CNN poll since the week of April 25th.

The president, a former real estate mogul in New York City, has made the economy an essential pillar of his 2016 campaign and predicted that it would "collapse" if he lost his candidacy for re-election in 2020

The CNN poll released on Wednesday also showed the first significant drop in the public's perception of the economy during Trump's reign at the White House.

Nearly two-thirds of Americans – 65% – responded that current economic conditions are good, down 5 points from the same question asked in May.

The decline comes as fear that the US will go into recession next year will grow.

A third of economists expect the world's largest economy to go into recession in 2020, fearing that Trump's tariffs and larger budget deficits will lead to further losses.

The CNN survey was conducted by SSRS from August 15 to 18 in a random national sample of 1,001 adults. The results for the full sample have a sampling error margin of 3.7 percentage points.
