Patrick Reed was embroiled in another rules controversy on Saturday at the Farmers Insurance Open in Torrey Pines.
At par four 10, Reed hit a 190-yard bunker shot with a TV replay showing the ball bounced once before settling into the rough. Believing the ball didn’t bounce, Reed picked it up to see if it was encrusted before a rules official arrived. Reed told the manager that no one in his group, as well as a nearby volunteer, saw him bounce.
Reed received one free drop and one per registered. He bugged four of the following holes before winning No.18 for a two under 70 and a share of the lead with Ortiz at 10 under. Ortiz had a 66 on the south course.
In December 2019, during the Tiger Woods Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas, Reed was penalized twice for appearing to deliberately improve his lie in a bunker.
“It’s obviously an unfortunate situation, but at the end of the day when you complete a round and the rules officer comes up to you and has the video and shows everything that has come down to the whole group and says that you did it perfectly, you did it exactly the right way, the protocols that you applied were perfect, at that point you know, I feel good about it, ”Reed said after the Saturday tour.
“The ball just disappeared. None of us saw it bounce, ”said Reed, who added that a volunteer nearby told him he was not bouncing. “I looked at my group and I said, ‘Guys, she didn’t see it bounce either, so I’m going to mark that ball and see if it’s integrated.’
“Once I scored it the first thing I wanted to do was make sure I got the ball out of my hand because you don’t want to clean it or whatever because you don’t know. still if it is integrated. When I put my finger there and it felt like it had started, the first thing was to call the official rules. … The rules officer said, ‘Yes, that bullet broke the plane.’
The pitch was soft from the rain overnight Thursday and in the second round Friday, when play was suspended for almost an hour due to a storm.
“At this point, we’re tracking what the adjudicator has said and also what the volunteers are and what we’re seeing,” Reed said. “When we’re out there we can’t see everything and when that happens you have to follow what the volunteers say and what the rulers say and when it all comes to the end we felt like we had done the right thing and the rules manager said we had done perfectly.
PGA Tour Rules Official Ken Tackett said Reed “has done everything that we ask of a player. This is obviously difficult and you have to question it when you watch the video; mild conditions, there are many variables. “
The tournament ends on Sunday.
