For many Americans, getting the coronavirus vaccine is a reward in itself. But for Patricia Fasnacht, the blow came with a sweet bonus.

Since receiving her first injection of the Pfizer vaccine earlier this month, Ms Fasnacht, a 62-year-old resident of High Point, North Carolina, has benefited from a promotion from the Krispy Kreme Donut Corp., which recently announced that it was offering a free daily donut until the end of 2021 at its U.S. locations to those who present their Covid-19 vaccination card. Ms Fasnacht says she has made a few visits already and doesn’t plan to stop anytime soon.

“After being home for a year, I’m happy to go out and have fun,” she says.

Officials at the North Carolina-based chain, which is part of JAB Holding Co. and has 369 locations across the United States, estimate the company handed out 125,000 promotion-related donuts in the first 96 hours.

The push to get gun shots has turned into something of a free frenzy, with businesses ranging from marijuana dispensaries to arcades promoting freebies. Companies are saying the idea of supporting the country’s immunization program at a critical time in its rollout – and if a side effect is a boost to business, so much the better.
