What distinguishes Marvel films from the rest of the superhero genre? Of course, there are consistent intrigues, character development and breathtaking actions – but basically, what most people want to talk about is jokes. The MCU as a franchise took a long time to clarify its tone, and it certainly varies from one movie to another, but overall, it's a pretty funny group of super-people. Here are some of the best gags of the newest (and successful) movie, Avengers: End of the game.
Everybody loves America's ass
If this is not part of your five best jokes of the movie, you probably will not really appreciate MCU's humor. The joke here is that Captain America is behind, well, the super. It's beautiful, really. And after the time we took to appreciate his pecs, his biceps and his impressive jaw (compliments of a super serum), it was time for us to discuss his other assets.
The joke begins with Tony Stark from 2023, who, along with Steve Rogers, Bruce Banner and Scott Lang, returns in 2012 during the Battle of New York. Observing the Avengers that day while they're blocking Loki, he says the old Cape's uniform "did nothing for his ass." At that, a Scott of the size of An ant told Steve 2023: "Do not listen to it, it's America donkey! That continued later, when the two Steves clashed, with Steve, the older and wiser, complimenting his rear.
Thor plays Fortnite
Thor experiences what can only be described as a PTSD symptom after killing Thanos and discovering that the Infinity Stones have disappeared. It seems that he is hibernating for two years. Meanwhile, he finds himself in New Asgard and plays video games?
When Rocket and Bruce come to get him out of his funk state, they meet an overweight, disheveled and ever-drunk Thunder God. While the big jokes were not really in good taste, it was undeniably hilarious to see the powerful Thor screaming his deep and scathing voice against a child who was harassing Korg as they played what is apparently still the multiplayer game on more popular at four. now.
Tony Stark meets Rocket
Poor rocket. As he does, as Peter Quill points out in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie, looks a lot like a raccoon, all Rocket knows is he's who he is. So it's quite unpleasant for the guy to constantly have people comparing him to different animals: Thor affectionately nicknamed him "Rabbit," but other less pleasant names include "panda trash" and "monkey at the head" triangular".
Not surprisingly, the king of the snark, Tony Stark, has his own denotation for Rocket. After his return to Earth and his deplorable state of health, Tony takes pictures of all Avengers, including this new member. When Rocket speaks, Tony says something like, "Honestly, at that precise second, I thought you were a Build-A-Bear.
Hulk is famous now – but not Ant-Man
An essential element of the plot of End of Game was that Scott had been trapped in the quantum realm for five years. Upon his return, he discovers that even though very little time has passed, much has changed on Earth, including the Avengers.
He and the audience were surprised to see the creature known in the comics as Professor Hulk – Bruce Banner managed to merge his two selves into one super-intelligent and super-strong being. Moreover, he is now famous. A group of children approach and ask to be photographed with Hulk, which allows Ant-Man to feel a little left out. The exchange between the two heroes in which Hulk tries to make Scott feel better (which he has never met before) is one of the film's most natural comedies.
Time travel to the cinema is … confusing
It's perhaps the Marvel movie that spends the most time talking about other movies. Above The great Lebowski and The adventurers of the lost arc get tiny nods, basically every film that deals with time travel is the name filed in a very noticeable scene.
Geniuses like Professor Hulk (and, apparently, Nebula) feel quite confident in their understanding of time travel, which they use quickly to demystify everything pop culture has ever taught us. Scott and Rhodey list all the movies they can think of, from Back to the future at A ride in time, which, according to the rules of this film, are completely false. It's kind of a joke almost too meta, because it's like if the End of Game the writers say, "Hey, we may not have it exactly here, but no one else has done it."
