One of the largest and most powerful steam locomotives in the world is in its infancy after five years of restoration work.
Big Boy No. 4014 left Saturday morning a Union Pacific catering workshop in Cheyenne, Wyoming, in front of hundreds of spectators. From there, he traveled to Ogden, Utah, to help celebrate the 150th anniversary of the transcontinental railroad.
The Big Boy engines transported goods between Wyoming and Utah in the 1940s and 1950s. It remains eight of the 25 Big Boys built, but only this one will be operational.
The Big Boy locomotive is longer than two city buses. It is heavier than a Boeing 747 jet filled with passengers, but powerful enough to propel 16 statues of freedom over a mountain range.
