The biggest successes of Canelo's victory against Jacobs and the next step for the middleweight champion

Although Canelo came out victorious, it was certainly not one of his most entertaining or memorable performances. Much of this had to do with Jacobs, who was once again too cautious at the start of a big fight. Canelo seemed to have some speed in the final stages of the fight after building a big lead early.

Although Marvin Hagler-Thomas Hearns was promised to us, what was delivered was a chess match with only sustained pockets of action.

Canelo effectively boxed for long bouts of fighting, saving the much larger Jacobs (who earlier in the morning did not meet the prescribed 10 pound hydration limit) and controlling things by methodically proceeding. In the first two-thirds of the fight, Canelo hit harder and cleaner and won all the trade.

It was a lot more a boxing match than a fight.

What's next for Canelo?

The most natural fight would be a third showdown with Gennady Golovkin, after beating up a draw in 2017 and winning a majority decision last September. Can you honestly name a best pure match at 160 pounds? Or a project that will generate as much commercial interest?

No you can not. You have the feeling that there are still pending cases between the two.

Doing this fight is a real possibility because they are both aligned on DAZN and this seems to be very easy to do.

What are the other options of Canelo?

It is possible to face Demetrius Andrade, whose WBO title is the last belt in the middleweights that Canelo does not have. But the reality is that "Boo Boo" is the very definition of high risk / low reward. He is a well-developed, slender and athletic athletic southpaw who glides smoothly around the ring and has never been particularly concerned with trying to please the crowd. In other words, it is a larger and younger version of Austin Trout and Erislandy Lara.

You could argue that if a green Canelo faced Trout and Lara – who had both bothered him for 12 rounds – why would a much more refined version of himself face Andrade? If you really dive into Andrade's record, you could argue against the fight.

But styles make fights and Andrade has the physical attributes to make life difficult in Canelo.

This match seems unlikely – at the moment – but Canelo has always been an ambitious fighter. He does not only want to earn money (which he earns a lot), he also wants to create history. Perhaps the attraction of capturing the four main belts would offset the perceived risk of facing Andrade.

For its value, Canelo said at the post-fight press conference that his goal was to unify the division and fight anyone with a title.

Is Canelo the best average weight?

At the present time, it is probably a rhetorical question.

Not only must he be considered the best middleweight on the planet, but with victories over Trout, Lara, Miguel Cotto, Amir Khan, Golovkin and now Jacobs, Alvarez has one of the most impressive CVs in boxing . You can affirm that he has received favorable treatment from the judges, but it is difficult to deny his evolution as a versatile boxer.

It will take a very good fighter a very good night to defeat Canelo, 28, who is in the middle of his physical development and who presents technically more facets every time.

He is the most brilliant star of boxing. And it looks like it's going to shine for a moment.
