Billie Eilish, 15, never thought it would lead to an awesome worship and a well received PE. do not smile at me. And yet, he did it. Well, the long-awaited debut album When are you sleeping, where are we going? finally abandoned last week and it is time to re-evaluate these expectations. Too melodramatic and completely lacking in self-awareness, the LP is full of pieces that do not have much to offer. Eilish and his brother / producer FINNEAS may have created an album that superficially sounds unique, but with careful listening, it is clear that in terms of authenticity and depth, they are not up to par.
To give you an idea, the best track of the album is probably the opener, "!!!!!!!", a 13-second immersion in the experience of Eilish who released his Invisalign. It's hard to differentiate between "xanny", "8", "listen before you go", "I like you" and "goodbye". Cringey lyrics tirelessly scroll through titles such as "xanny" and "listen before you go". The most interesting aspect of "wish you're gay" is that things get worse with each and every listening.
"Xanny" could have been an introspective reflection on the part of a person confronted with the self-destructive behavior of his peers. Instead, it is pious, indulgent, and disdainful. In "Listen Before You Go," Eilish tries – and fails – to explore musically the agonies of depression and suicide. Rather than fighting the intense and existential desperation of wanting to take his own life, Eilish chooses to romanticize it. "Tell me that love is endless, do not be so pretentious / Leave me as you do."
I hope that the dangerous tendency to romanticize suicide is the only weak point of the album. Eilish, perhaps unintentionally, uses the idea of quirkiness as an excuse to justify his inability to handle rejection. "I'd just like you to be gay / To spare my pride / To give an explanation to your lack of interest / Do not say I'm not your type / Just tell me I'm not your favorite sexual orientation. "This strangely reminiscent of" Ur So Gay, "Katy Perry's homophobia, is a story that many LGBTQ + people know all too well: heterosexual people use our queerism as a joke. She is without complaining. "The idea of the song," she told PopBuzz, "it's a joke."
In the end, only two tracks out of 14 deserve to be listened to. "Naughty" uses the terrifying mark of Eilish's whispering brand in a work that is conscious of its lyrical and complex complexity in its production. Even "my strange addiction", which would take the crown as the best track of the album is undermined by the unusual and unsuitable Office some samples. Nevertheless, the performance of Eilish is firm and clear, his voice dances on a rhythmic rhythm.
Together, everything reads like a particularly awkward and totally unconscious Tumblr post: "you should see me in a wreath" is literally inspired by a Sherlock episode. It is this same lack of awareness that prevents the melodrama from being ironic or resonant emotionally. Instead, it becomes something silly and trivial, like a bad story about Riverdale. In addition to his inability to approach stories of importance with taste, it is too hard to ignore.
When are you sleeping, where are we going? is an example of how an impeccable carbonated beverage package can nevertheless hide and sell an empty or even insulting product. It's also a proof that pop music looks like a gen-Zer stereotype. It may be a true reflection of who Eilish is, but it also more broadly reflects some of the worst parts of the over-sharing internet. Are they identical? This album seems to think so.
When you are not sufficiently aware of yourself to rely on the stereotype, you become it, and that is what happens here. Eilish seems so concerned about the idea of creating her own genre that she ends up reproducing a personality that comes directly from the grimace induction. "Skater boi" messages. It is not that there is no promise, there are many. Now, you just have to wait to see if she will redeem herself and blossom fully, or if she will be content to live in the two dimensions of a character walking on the Internet.
