The Braves and Diamondbacks agreed on a one-for-one player trade late last night. The Diamondbacks sent a veteran wide receiver Stephane Vogt to the Braves in exchange for the first baseman Bricklayer Bern, by the Diamondbacks.
The Braves are in Veteran Acquisition Mode after picking up Pederson game of the Cubs, and now Vogt of the Diamondbacks. The Braves have been in full-fledged carousel mode behind the dish from the start Travis d’Arnaud fell with a torn ligament in his hand in early May.
Regarding their types of future receivers, Alex jackson also landed on the injured list along with Arnaud with a strained hamstring, and Guillaume Contreras only hit 0.204 / 0.278 / 0.387 out of 158 plaque appearances before being sent back to Triple-A.
Vogt will join the veterans Jonathan lucroy and Kevan smith on the active list of the Braves. Jeff Mathis also saw a few action games earlier this season, but he failed to register a hit in three games. Lucroy is also a new addition, having only played two games in Atlanta this year. Smith, meanwhile, might be on the roster soon after slashing from .197 / .274 / .227 in 69 home plate appearances. Bringing in both Lucroy and Vogt over the past two days suggests that the Braves don’t see much long-term use in Smith as they try to stay on the hunt for the National League East crown.
As for Vogt himself, he brings the added value of being able to play elsewhere on the pitch, which would allow the Braves to have three receivers on the list if they so choose. The 36-year-old veteran has reached .212 / .307 / .386 in 151 home plate appearances this season, starting 35 games for the Snakes.
The Braves are nowhere near the luxury tax, so that’s not a concern for them, although Vogt is playing on a one-year, $ 3.5 million contract, so he’s affordable regardless. He will be a free agent at the end of the year.
In exchange for a few months of Vogt, the Diamondbacks get a 25-year-old prospect in Bern. The 33rd round draft pick signed for $ 10,000 on UNC in 2018, and due to the pandemic, Bern doesn’t have much professional experience to speak of. He’s only played five games as a rookie for the Braves this year, and given his age, the first baseman is little more than a driver for the Diamondbacks.
