The Atlanta Braves extended their winning streak to three straight games with a 6-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday night.
The Braves got to work in the first as Jorge Soler led the game grabbing an error from Josh VanMeter in third place. Soler was cleared on a ball on the ground by Freddie Freeman but Freeman first beat the baton. After an Ozzie Albies flew off, Austin Riley stepped up to the plate and drove a 1-2 throw to the left for his 30th home run of the season to give Atlanta a 2-0 lead.
Jesse Chavez got the start as an opener for Atlanta. He allowed a few steps in the first, but allowed VanMeter to fly off to the left to leave both runners stranded. Chavez took out Carson Kelly on another steal to start the second and was later replaced by Drew Smyly who only needed seven pitches to secure the next two strikeouts.
The Braves increased their lead in the third. Freeman scored with one out, then came on to score on Ozzie Albies’ 29th Homer of the season to take the lead to 4-0.
Arizona got a comeback point in the third half. Daulton Varsho scored a single with one out, then moved up to third on a Ketel Marte hit. Varsho then came home to score on Pavin Smith’s pitch to make the score 4-1.
Atlanta recovered that point in the fifth when Soler shot solo to the right to make it 5-1.
Smyly gave Ildemaro Vargas a fifth singles lead. Luke Weaver’s decay placed him in the scoring position. Smyly then got Varsho to fly for the second out. Brian Snitker would then return to his pen and call Jacob Webb who had Marte get down on the first pitch he saw to end the inning.
Smyly would quit after allowing four hits and a run in 3 1/3 innings. He struck out four strikes and failed to step on a batter.
Jacob Webb gave VanMeter a two-out single but struck out Kelly to leave him stuck in a scoreless sixth. Since the start of May, Webb has allowed three earned runs in 23 2/3 innings. After Tyler Matzek worked a scoreless seventh, Luke Jackson came in and things got risky. Marte started the round with a single. Jackson then took Pavin Smith out on strikes, then David Peralta was called out on the ground. Jackson then gave back-to-back marches to VanMeter and pinch hitter Kole Calhoun to charge the bases. However, Jackson returned and asked Jake McCarthy to fly safely to Adam Duvall in the center to block the runners.
The Braves added an insurance point in the ninth as Travis d’Arnaud doubled up and then scored on a Dansby Swanson single to make it 6-1.
AJ Minter gave Vargas a doubles lead to start the ninth, but sat the next three hitters to close things off.
With the win, Atlanta improves to 79-70 on the season. They maintain their three-game lead over the Philadelphia Phillies and reduce their magic number to win the NL East to 10. They will look to secure a series victory Wednesday night with Ian Anderson facing Merrill Kelly.
