BARCELONA–Chalk one for mathematics. Although the Samsung Galaxy S10 has a Bright Night mode, it does not compare to the dazzling Night Sight mode of the Google Pixel 3, which has changed the photography on smartphone with low light. We tested this feature before the Mobile World Congress.
The difference seems to be in the software. Google Night Vision captures multiple images and combines them with the help of software to create a surprisingly bright image with very little light. Samsung told us that its own Bright Night relied mainly on the S10's double-aperture optics and that it seemed impossible to draw as much detail from an image as Night Sight.
Night Sight can also enhance images taken with the camera before, which Bright Night can not do.
We compared the Galaxy S9 +, the Galaxy S10 and the Google Pixel 3 here. Night modes only affect images taken under the weakest light. In a dim light, like the night with lampposts or in a restaurant, the three phones are doing very well. Look at these pictures (all the pictures are in the order of pixel 3, then Galaxy S9 +, then Galaxy S10 +):
Turn the light on until you can barely see it, and Night Sight advance. These shots from the stairwell and from my apartment were done in an extremely dim light – in person, I could barely see the pattern on the stairwell, myself. (Again, the order is Pixel 3, Galaxy S9, Galaxy S10.)
Finally, here are some selfies in low light. As you can see, Night Sight makes a huge difference if you take pictures of yourself in the dark.
As we saw in our original Night Sight comparison, it also easily beats Apple phones. In our previous test, we found that the Galaxy Note 9 (which has the same camera as the S9 +) is better than the iPhone XS Max in very low light.
The Galaxy S10 + has a great camera. The S9 + too. But when we saw demonstrations of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor on the new S10 +, Qualcomm promised new, drastically dark modes. It seems that Samsung has not taken over Qualcomm with this offer.
We are still testing the Galaxy S10 +. Until now, it still works better than the Snapdragon 855 reference device that we tested last month. Stay tuned for further conclusions and a comprehensive review.
