Petara Cordero, the girlfriend of Chris Smith, the Browns' defensive wing, was killed Wednesday morning in a car accident on I-90 West in Cleveland.

Cordero and Smith were stopped on the side of the road as a result of a malfunction in Smith's vehicle tire, resulting in an accident with a car when the vehicle entered a spin and eventually reached the median. After exiting the car without serious injury, Cordero was struck by an oncoming vehicle. Police and paramedics from Cleveland arrived at the scene shortly after the incident.

"The words can not describe the pain we feel for Chris after the loss of his girlfriend, Petara," said Dee and Jimmy Haslam in a statement. "Our whole organization is crying with Chris, his family and the Cordero family. We will do everything possible to offer them our support, our comfort and all the necessary resources in this most difficult time. "

According to a statement from the police, Smith was not in a state of drunkenness.

Brown's players were informed of the incident at a team meeting on Wednesday morning. Brownies coach Freddie Kitchens visited Smith at home earlier in the day.

In addition to the standard internal resources of the team, the Browns will have on-site counselors throughout the week to provide emotional support and care to all players and staff.

Smith and Cordero recently celebrated the birth of their daughter, Haven Harris Smith. Smith was excused from the Browns-Colts pre-game to be able to attend the birth.

Smith will receive full support from the team's resources and will have the opportunity to grieve at his or her discretion, including being excused or participating in team activities, if desired.
