CLEVELAND – The Cleveland Browns will show Gerald McCoy all the way.
The self-defending tackle, released earlier this week by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, will travel to Cleveland on Friday. Executive Director John Dorsey said the meeting would be an opportunity for both parties to see if they want a common future.
"It's a chance for us to have a chance to meet, one by one, and find out who Gerald is," said Dorsey at a downtown celebration for selection by Cleveland of the NFL to host the 2021 draft. "This also gives Gerald a chance to see who the Cleveland Browns are and what direction we are going to take."
McCoy, a six-time pro, was fired after the Bucs failed to find a business partner willing to accept his $ 13 million salary. They agreed to talk with Ndamukong Suh to take his place.
Several other teams have shown interest in McCoy, the No. 3 pick in the 2010 draft. The 31-year-old has had a bad year in 2018, but Dorsey thinks McCoy is not close to being finished.
"As for his ability to play football, he can still play football," Dorsey said.
Dorsey downplayed the importance of McCoy's agreeing to meet the Browns, who had high expectations in 2019 after a season-off during which the team added star receiver Odell Beckham Jr., the defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson and running back Olivier Vernon.
"We're going to flip over every rock and see what happens," Dorsey said. "I mean, it's just a visit."
But the idea of adding McCoy to a defensive line rotation that already includes the Pro Bowler, Myles Garrett, Richardson, Vernon and Larry Ogunjobi, made Brown fans even more excited.
McCoy had six sacks in 14 games last season and 54 years and over in 123 career games.
During his visit, he will meet new Cleveland coach Freddie Kitchens and defensive coordinator Steve Wilks. He already knows Browns offensive coordinator Todd Monken, who spent three seasons in Tampa and praised McCoy.
"I think a lot about Gerald," said Monken after Wednesday's training. "Gerald has had an amazing career and has been an outstanding football player for us – he's a great person."
