The woman threw the object out of the Senate tribune, according to a statement from the California Highway Patrol, which investigates the incident. He said the liquid has landed on several members of the Senate.

"The Senate of the State of California is a crime scene," said Senator Richard Pan's office.

When the woman went out into the hallway, she was arrested on charges of assault, vandalism and breach of the use of state property.

On Monday, California governor Gavin Newsom signed two bills – SB 276 and a related bill, SB 714 – limiting medical exemptions for vaccines. Anti-vaccination activists have been demonstrating in the capital for two weeks.

Pan introduced SB 276 in February and compared Friday's incident to an assault against him by an anti-vaccination activist last month.

"This (last) incident was provoked by the violent rhetoric perpetuated by the leaders of the anti-Vox movement, and as their rhetoric intensifies, incidents of violence also multiply." An attack on the democratic process and an assault on all Californians … strong condemnation of all, "said Pan in a statement.
