The father of a recently qualified Boston Celtics player was found dead mysteriously in a Connecticut hotel room, according to a report released on Friday.
Edwin Waters Jr. – the father of Tremont Waters, a 21-year-old guard – was pronounced dead Thursday at a West Haven Super 8 hotel, Connecticut Post cops said.
The chief medical examiner has described his death as suicide, the newspaper reported. The police first responded to a call about a sick or injured person at the hotel around noon.
Waters, a star player at Notre Dame High School in New Haven, signed a contract with the Celtics earlier this week. He was the 51st choice in the 2019 NBA draft.
He also played for the LSU Tigers and was named the defensive player of the year 2019.
His parents, who called themselves Waters, worked hard to keep him young on the ground.
"I always taught him to be a great young man. What I like in the sport, basketball teaches him to lead, to give example and to be responsible for others, "Edwin Waters told the New Haven Register in 2013.
"I just want him to one day get a university degree and be able to feed himself and his family and children later in life. We love basketball, but it all depends on the type of young man he will become, what type of husband, what type of father, a leader in his own community, "he added.
