While Volkswagen continues to praise its commitment to electric vehicles – and more specifically a family of long-range consumer offerings – it has taken its time to achieve this.
The company talked about producing an inexpensive entry-level EV, dubbed the "people's car" with a lower starting price than £ 18,000 (approximately $ 22,000). However, the head of the company, Herbert Diess, has again indicated that it will take a long time before this plan is implemented.
Apparently, despite the gigantic size and abundance of the company's resources, VW still has not figured out how to make an affordable EV with significant autonomy. This is not surprising, however, since the world's largest electric vehicle – Tesla – has been producing electric vehicles for a number of years and has not yet proven its worth.
Now that Tesla has finally arrived on the market with a more affordable and mainstream electric car – the Model 3 – one would think that profits would be more likely because of the much higher sales volume. Unfortunately, this is still not the case.
In the end, VW will market an affordable long-range electric vehicle that is comparable in size to its Polo (pictured above). 1 or I.D. 2 and be manufactured on the new SEM architecture of the manufacturer. However, instead of marketing it as soon as possible and potentially losing money, the company plans to wait until 2023 to make and sell the car for profit.
