The City of Michigan Refuses to Renew Contract with ICE to Detain Inmates

The city of Dearborn, Michigan, announced Wednesday that it would not renew its contract with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to detain its inmates.

The Mayor of Dearborn, Jack O. Reilly Jr. said that the city, which had hosted thousands of immigrants detained in the past, will no longer collaborate voluntarily with ICE, according to The Detroit News, following the adverse reactions of religious and activist groups.

"The Mayor withdrew the recommendation to renew the contract with Calhoun County to keep Detainees in custody in the Town of Dearborn, in light of concerns over the part of the agreement that Dearborn would continue to house ICE prisoners from Calhoun County for a very long time, short term stays, "said city spokeswoman Mary Laundroche.

An ICE official reportedly said the Dearborn town's call would not interfere with his operations.

The Hill contacted ICE for a comment.

The decision not to renew the contract comes after protesters protested outside the Dearborn Police Department last week as part of a #CloseTheCamps national campaign.

Dearborn had renewed its contracts with ICE every year for more than 10 years. The contract stipulated that the Dearborn police would detain ICE detainees at its 20-bed facility in exchange for sending 20 long-term prisoners to Battle Creek Prison.

Last year, a county jail in California made the same decision to terminate its contract with ICE.
