He followed a group of New Yorkers in their twenties as they attempted to navigate the city during an attack by a giant monster. The film was made under the radar and used a viral marketing campaign to generate interest. The tactic worked: The film, made for $ 25 million, had a massive $ 40 million opening weekend and rose to $ 172 million gross worldwide.

It spawned a “Cloverfield universe” which saw two more modest films, 10 Cloverfield Lane and The Cloverfield paradox, published in 2016 and 2018, respectively. These films were originally developed as separate films, but were folded under a Cloverfield banner linking them to a related story with sci-fi and monster themes. When Paradox Critically disappointed after being sold to Netflix and with Abrams’ attention apparently focused on his deal with WarnerMedia, it was presumed that the Cloverfield the franchise was buried. (But no brand in Hollywood ever really dies, right?)

The details of the take are hidden under Central Park.
