The Yankees lost a match on Friday night as Brian Cashman held a press conference to discuss the latest set of physical injuries and setbacks. The 2019 season, to date, could hardly have been summed up better.
Eloy Jimenez and James McCann then dominated Chad Green with a seventh goal which allowed the White Sox to widen the gap to 9-6. The rain that fell all evening worsened. The game was delayed at 21:51. The Yankees announced that Cashman would be available in the media a few minutes later, apparently to discuss Dellin Betances' injury. But that turned into a 20-minute session on the club's state.
Cashman mentioned that his team was not playing competitively during this injury storm. I then asked him why and he always trusted these players. Cashman followed with a six-minute filibuster during which he indicated that he was expecting the match to be postponed and the Yankees stuck in a defeat. At that moment, he was informed that this had already occurred.
"You see, everything is fine for me now," joked the Yankees general manager.
The final was 9-6 and another moment to capitalize on an expected punch bag had come and gone. The White Sox lost five times in a row, dropping 45-14. But J.A. Happ, one of the healthy frontline players still playing, is faded for the third time in three starts.
The Yankees put Happ at 4-1 and 5-3 in the first place of the veteran southpaw between ballads and lands too delectable that the White Sox slapped. Happ was part of a silver – optimized open season to make the Yankees more bullet – proof. But he has a 8.76 ERA.
The Yanks have been criticized by fan groups and the media for what was portrayed as too frugal and not pursuing Bryce Harper or Manny Machado with unfailing fervor. But the Yanks had players in position they believed in or wanted to see more. They ranked the pitch as their main need and Patrick Corbin as their preferred free agent.
It was here that they were financially cautious. They did not want to go beyond four years and Corbin got six from the National. Friday night, as Happ faded, Corbin forced the Pirates to a point in seven innings with 11 strikeouts to lower his points total to three (2).
There is still a long way to go in this season and these contracts (Happ got $ 34 million over two years), but up to now, he and James Paxton (imported into a trade) do not help the rotation to overcome the long absence of ace, Luis Severino.
"We have people who are capable, it's just a combination of, yes, are we hurt? We are injured, but we are still capable, "Cashman said. "But we have a lot of bad games going on simultaneously on the active player list."
The Yanks find their first injured player on Saturday when CC Sabathia makes his debut in 2019. But Gary Sanchez (calf) was placed on the list of injured Friday, so the number of leavers will still be 11. And the Yanks announced that Betances did not feel well during a simulated game on Thursday. After testing on Friday, he was determined that he needed a cortisone injection that would keep him at least six or seven weeks older.
Sanchez, Betances, Severino and Aaron Hicks would not have been as hurt as he turned out to have suffered setbacks. Cashman said that the organization was still not sure how Severino, victim of a shoulder injury, had also suffered a secondary second-year stress. He detailed the multiple levels of doctors and the second opinions used by the Yankees, but that's all the kind of stuff that, if it happened to the Mets, would be perceived as a fault of organization.
"Right now, times are tough," said Cashman.
Effectively. No part of the team plays well or very clearly. Cashman acknowledged "give away games because we played badly". The Yankees have had a lot of dark moments in the past quarter century and have always figured out how to get together to – at a minimum – have a winning record and some chances to compete in the playoffs come September.
There is enough time for the same thing in 2019. But let's face it, the mojo is not good when your team loses a match at a press conference designed to discuss a plague of injuries.
"I hoped that tonight we could solve [the poor play]Cashman said. "But we added to that with more news about injuries and bad games."
