The collapsible design idea from Microsoft could change the game

After the debacle surrounding the release of the Samsung Galaxy Fold, companies will probably struggle to find ways to strengthen future folding devices. It turns out that a folding screen patent from Microsoft could be the solution to extend the life of foldable devices.

In a new set of Microsoft patents discovered by Windows United (via The edge), we can see that Microsoft thinks that a liquid-enriched hinge is a solution to keep an unknown collapsible device from Microsoft during all its use. The liquid fills the voids created by the movement of the hinge, which relieves the screen.

The fluid theoretically helps not only to reduce the pressure, but also to prevent dust and other debris from entering the display, which is another problem we found on the Galaxy Fold.

Interestingly, this patent does not appear to be "locked" on a specific collapsible device from Microsoft. Instead, it was filed by "Microsoft Technology License," which strongly suggests that the company could sell this design to other companies.

In October, Microsoft will host an event in which it will introduce new entries into its Surface tablet range. It's unlikely we'll see a foldable, dual-screen product or ready for commercial use, but it's quite possible that Microsoft will announce future devices based on this technology.
