No criminal charges are expected in this case, said Syracuse police officers at a press conference held Thursday in Tehran, calling it a "tragic accident".
Boeheim has stopped at the scene and has tried to assist and cooperate with the investigation, police said.
The legendary college coach has undergone "field sobriety tests and alco-sensors", which "have not revealed any sign of disability," according to police.
Boeheim issued an emotional statement Thursday morning.
"I am sorry that a member of our community has died as a result of last night's crash," Boeheim said.
The fatal accident occurred around 11:20 am, police said.
The victim, Jorge Jimenez, 51, of Syracuse, was in a car that had lost control of the highway, hitting a railing, police said.
The car was in the middle of the road when the accident occurred, police said.
Jimenez and the other three people in the car with him were walking along the road when, according to authorities, Boeheim noticed the vacant vehicle and tried to avoid it, police said.
"As a result," Boeheim, 74, "hit the victim who was at the side of the road," according to a statement from the police. Another person suffered minor injuries, police said.
The collision occurred on a dark stretch of road, police said, and Boeheim used his mobile phone light to warn other drivers and avoid further collisions.
The weather may have played a role, according to the police.
The coach said that he and his wife "extend their deepest condolences to the Jimenez family."
"Out of respect for the people involved, I will not make any other comments for the moment," said Boeheim.
According to the police, Boeheim's speed was not clear, but Onondaga County Attorney, Bill Fitzpatrick, told WSYR, an affiliate of ABC Syracuse, that the coach was driving at an appropriate speed.
The accident occurred shortly after Syracuse won its home game against the University of Louisville.
"We are saddened by the death of a member of our downtown New York community," said Syracuse Sports Director John Wildhack in a statement. "We extend our deepest sympathy to all those affected by this tragic accident."
Wildhack said "Boeheim met briefly with his team" on Thursday "but did not attend the practice".
Siracusa Chancellor Kent Syverud added, "I am deeply saddened by the news that a member of our downtown New York community has been tragically killed in an accident last night involving Coach Jim." Boeheim ".
"Coach Boeheim is naturally torn apart by the loss of life," said Syverud, presenting his "most sincere condolences to the Jimenez family and all those who suffer this terrible loss".
