Gregg Nigl almost did not complete his March Madness tab in the NCAA.com Bracket Challenge.
Now he has done the story.
Nigl, 40-year-old Northeast Side, has a perfect slice between 48 games, the highest number of consecutive games that anyone has ever correctly predicted in the NCAA.com tournament challenge.
He learned the existence of his perfect support Monday night, when a journalist found him.
"We could not believe it." My wife (Casandra) was sitting next to me and I had it on the phone speaker, "said Nigl. "I did not stop asking:" How do I know that this is not a joke? "
He went on his computer, "saw my support and everything was green.It was pretty wild."
This is quite unlikely as well. The chances of a perfect support are debatable. Some say it is 1 in 9.2 billion. Others say that it is 1 in 2.4 billion. Another estimate is 1 in 2 billion.
Whatever the real probability, the fact is that it is ridiculously improbable to properly select the 63 games of the NCAA tournament. Nobody has ever done it, even though, as Jim Carrey asked in "Dumb and Dumber", "are you saying there is a chance?"
Nigl, at this point, is as close as anyone (in 2010, someone also managed to get to Sweet 16 with perfect support intact, but CBS never checked it).
On Thursday morning, a few hours before the deadline for submission of the hooks, Nigl was ill and went to bed. Neuropsychologist of the US Department of Veterans Affairs in Columbus, Nigl has stopped working.
He was about to go back to sleep but he said that he would have felt bad if he had not registered a support in his friend's tournament group.
"I was half asleep and sick," he said.
He filled it anyway. Now he is 48 years old for 48 years old.
Nigl, who has been living in Columbus for 10 years, admits he is lucky, but he is also a college basketball fan with no qualms about making his choice.
While he mostly watches the Big Ten games during the season, Nigl said he had done his homework after the unveiling of the tournament pitch, including watching some brackology shows on television.
In addition to its historical support, two of the other three Nigl supports are in first place in their groups.
His third place, which was heavy of choice, was less successful in a tournament in which 12 of the 16 remaining teams are ranked No. 1, 2 and 3.
In its perfect category, Nigl a Gonzaga # 1 defeating Kentucky # 2 for the national title. Duke and Virginia complete his Final Four.
Nigl watched the games closely. In fact, during a trip, he and his wife stopped at a brewery in Erie, Pennsylvania, to watch Michigan face Florida in the round of 16. Nigl, who grew up in Michigan, is a fan of forever.
While Nigl likes the way he chose the remaining games, he does not count on his support to stay perfect.
"Seeing the odds of a perfect support up to now, I'm not very sure it stays that way," said Nigl. "But anything can happen."
