The compact design of Honda's 2019 F1 engine has not detracted from its performance – F1

Honda says the performance of its 2019 Formula 1 engine has not been compromised by Red Bull's pulse for a more compact design.

Red Bull boss Christian Horner said this week that the installation of the Honda power pack was the best on his team, calling the engine "beauty".

Honda's previous attempts to produce an extremely compact design hindered its progression in its first year with McLaren in 2015, but the Japanese manufacturer insisted that its 19-foot approach would not hurt its performance.

"I think we are neutral," said Toyoharu Tanabe, Honda F1 Technical Director, about the tradeoff between performance and packaging.

"Powertrain performance or total package performance, we had a lot of talk with both teams [Red Bull and sister team Toro Rosso]and we compromised [to work out] what is better.

"If you have more power, [you have] more performance in one direction but the side of the chassis is [at a] deficit. So what is the best compromise? Then we decide the best [overall] the performance of the package. "

Tanabe said the demand for a more compact design had been launched by Red Bull Technology.

"Red Bull Technology has discussed it between teams and it makes our job very simple," he said.

"The goal is to make it compact and enjoyable, which is what we did during this off season."

Tanabe was also confident that Honda had progressed in reliability this year, staying true to the same concept.

"We took up the concept of last year, which means the concept of 2017," he said.

"One of the reasons is that the regulation of power plants does not change this year, so we continued to work on our power plant.

"We have improved our performance and reliability for this year. [the engine] is not new but updated. "
