Until a few weeks ago, business leaders were confident about what to expect this fall.
The offices would reopen after Labor Day. Business travel would resume more widely. Long-delayed business meetings, conventions and off-site meetings were finally about to take place.
The pandemic has, once again, overturned many of these plans.
The rapid and surprising resurgence of Covid-19 cases and hospitalizations across the United States is pushing business leaders to tear up playbooks for the next few months.
A return in September is no longer a goal for many companies. Some employers, such as banking giant Wells Fargo & Co. and managed care company Centene Corp., have postponed return-to-office dates to October in recent days. Meanwhile, a slew of other top companies are now forecasting that it will be 2022 until most of the workers return.
