Apple today announced the release of watchOS 5.2 to the public, and the update includes extending ECG support to a handful of new countries. With today's extension, ECG on Apple Watch Series 4 is now available in more than 20 countries and territories around the world.

Since the launch of the ECG feature of the Apple Watch Series 4 in December, this feature is limited to the United States and their respective territories. Since the ECG functionality of Apple Watch is one of the most useful features of the 4 series, this limitation was important.

With today's update to watchOS 5.2, ECG and irregular heartbeat notifications are now available in Hong Kong and 19 new European countries. All countries and territories where the Apple Watch ECG and Irregular Heartbeat Notification features are supported:

  • L & # 39; Austria
  • Belgium
  • Denmark
  • Finland
  • la France
  • Germany
  • Greece
  • Guam
  • Hong Kong
  • Hungary
  • Ireland
  • Italy
  • luxembourg
  • Netherlands
  • Portugal
  • Porto Rico
  • Romania
  • Spain
  • Sweden
  • Swiss
  • United Kingdom
  • United States
  • US Virgin Islands

The fact that Apple has been able to add as many additional countries in just 4 months is remarkable and should give hope to users in regions where the ECG is not yet available. Unfortunately, the delay is probably due to the regulatory approval process more than anything.

"We saw that the ECG application and the irregular pace notifications on Apple Watch were having a significant impact on our customers across the United States," said Jeff Williams, chief operating officer at Apple. "We are excited to offer these features to customers in Europe and Hong Kong, giving them access to empowering information about their heart health."

For example, with the current deployment in new European countries, the ECG application of the Apple Watch app and the irregular rhyming notification functions are now marked and cleared CE. Apparently, Apple must obtain regulatory approval for each country in which it wants to distribute these health features. In Europe, it has been possible to significantly expand functionality to new countries by obtaining approval from an organization. Unfortunately, it will not be so easy everywhere else in the world.
