Nailya Khametvalieva, owner of Notchtop Bakery & Cafe, said the customer, whom she identified only as David, came to her restaurant in Estes Park on Wednesday for eggs, bacon, sausage, cookies and sauce.

As he paid the check for $ 20.04, David asked his server how many people were working that day.

He ended up leaving the tip of $ 1,400 with instructions to give each of the seven employees $ 200.

“It really made all the waiters cry [and] cooks – you know nobody ever thinks of cooks – the cooks were so surprised and shocked. We were all shocked, “Khametvalieva said.” We thanked him, but I felt like we hadn’t done enough. “

She said David lives in the area, but it was only his second time to eat out.

Gloria Fuentes waited for David the two times he came and told CNN affiliate KMGH that she couldn’t believe it when she saw the bill.

“I was like, ‘Oh my God, am I dreaming or what’s going on?” “Fuentes told KMGH.

Another waiter told KMGH that the money would be of great help to his family.

“It’s $ 200 for me, but it’s also $ 200 for my husband. It’s also $ 200 for my daughters, for the things we needed to be successful,” said Jayme Johnson.

Khametvalieva has never closed the restaurant she has run for almost 10 years because of the Covid-19 pandemic, but said business has been tough. The forest fires of the past year have also added to the challenge.

She said she was able to donate hours to all of her employees and also got a PPP loan.

Travel and the coronavirus pandemic: everything you need to know
Estes Park is about 70 miles outside of Denver, and Khametvalieva says she gets a lot of business in the summer from foreign tourists.

She said many of those customers bought gift cards to support the restaurant because they couldn’t make it in person.

“I wanted to thank everyone who truly feels for small business and the people were so grateful, kind and kind. They have a big heart, especially David, ”she said.
