The Pittsburgh Pirates are one of the three worst teams in baseball. On Monday, the Braves were savagely beaten by these Pirates, who symbolically slammed the door on any momentum Atlanta took after a spectacular victory on Sunday. It’s been a trend all season for the Braves to approach or even hit 0.500 and then crumble.
Recently, the Atlanta offensive has been an abject disaster. Finding a scapegoat in the midst of these offensive struggles has been difficult, as most of the offensive has been inconsistent. The loss of two key contributors to Marcell Ozuna and Travis d’Arnaud slowed the offense considerably, but getting nothing from Dansby Swanson and Cristian Pache was just as costly. Swanson was particularly disappointing, posting an 86 OPS + at this point.
Can the Braves afford to continue to use four replacement players in their daily roster? With just three weeks to go before the trade deadline, Alex Anthopoulos must determine whether this list is worth expanding. Performances like that in Atlanta on Monday inspire little confidence, despite all the runners who have remained on the bases. Adding just one more impact bat to this lineup could bring them much closer with the hope that Arnaud can join the lineup later this summer. After watching three months of extremely inconsistent play, should Anthopoulos be a buyer at the end of July?
