The Darius version of Genesis Mini looks a lot like wearing a fan [Update]

Sega unveiled the latest batch of games on its Genesis Mini, including a particularly surprising inclusion: a game never before seen on Genesis, apparently made by a fan. This is a beautiful port of the 1987 Taito arcade shooter Darius, who has never had a Genesis version in the day.

Update, 14:56 East: Sega told Kotaku that the version of Darius on the Genesis Mini is a brand new version worn by the M2 developer, and not based on fan work. However, since the Mini version has striking similarities to the port created by a fan, it still seems possible that there is a connection between them. We have updated the title and the first paragraph of this story. The rest of our original story is below.

Developers of the Japanese Mega Drive Mini revealed the new game in a livestream earlier this morning, and Sega of America confirmed that it would also be included in the Mini Genesis. The livestream panel noted that this version of Darius uses a ROM memory size of 32 megabits, which would have created an extremely expensive cartridge in the late 80s or early 90s. Darius II, which was focused on Genesis in 1990, used an 8-megabit ROM, which was considered important for the time.)

What Sega did not notice in his livestream, or elsewhere, is behind this new version of Darius. Internet the most knowledgeable nerds Genesis Hidecade immediately recognized the port as being the work of an amateur programmer, who publicly shared updates on the unofficial project last year. Again, although it is not confirmed that the port of Hidecade is the one used here, it is extremely unlikely that there will be a second full port of Darius. In addition, screenshots (including the HUD, which needed to be redesigned for the Genesis screen) look the same.

In addition, it appears that Hidecade has reviewed all references to the project from its personal pages, including Twitter, its blog and YouTube. In the livestream, Sega simply stated that the game was developed by M2, the developer of the Genesis Mini software, and overseen by Taito. (Kotaku contacted Sega and will update this story if she returns a comment.)

Although it is disappointing that the apparent origin of Darius is not announced publicly (or at least not yet), it's not surprising. Fans tend to work anonymously or under pseudonyms in Japan. It is therefore possible that this situation is what is preferred by all parties concerned. Anyway, it's very exciting to see a project made by fans adopted, formalized and published by the original copyright holder. It would be great to see this happen a lot more often.

The $ 80 Genesis Mini will be released on September 19th. While Sega had originally announced that its mini-console would have 40 games, today's announcement brought it to 42. The other surprise game was Tetris, which will not be the unpublished version of Genesis back in the day, but a brand new and better version.
