Warning: SPOILERS for Dark Phoenix are in advance!
During its almost two decades of existence, the X-Men franchise was full of ups and downs, and one of the offenders in this latter category was the lack of continuity. From multiple versions of the same character existing in these movies to some unexplained events and twists, this mutant-filled series has never been one to follow a straight and consistent narrative path.
An attempt to rectify this problem took place in 2014 with X-Men: Days of Future Past, who saw Wolverine return in 1973 and change the schedule of the franchise. True, there were still continuity issues to follow, but at least in this revised timeline, rather than being chased by Sentinels, things were peaceful for the X-Men in 2023. Unfortunately, with the way in which the last Dark Phoenix concludes, it's incredibly difficult to align the way events go from the end to the brightest Days of the future past in the future (suppose that's the case.) Logan takes place in a separate chronology).
In the revised timeline of X-Men that was created at the end of X-Men: Days of Future PastXavier's gifted high school is still in business, with Storm, Beast, Kitty Pryde and Colossus all teaching to mutants, and Wolverine learns that he is a history instructor. Professor X is still the director of the school and the biggest surprise was that Cyclops and Jean Gray were still alive.
Now, let's move on to Dark Phoenix, which resulted in Jean Gray taking Vuk, the leader of D'Bari, into space and killing the stranger as she reabsorbed Phoenix's stolen force. Nevertheless, even with these changing events, logically, it is incredibly difficult to believe that with the Dark Phoenix ends, we are still on the road to this future presented at the end of X-Men: Days of Future Past. Changing the name of the school is not a problem, as the building's exterior in 2023 has never been shown, and Beast and Storm still do not teach there. No, the problem is where Professor X and Jean Gray are left at the end of Dark Phoenix.
Let's start with Jean. It's clear when Dark Phoenix concludes that her fellow X-Men believe she's dead, but watching this fiery phoenix is a not-so-subtle indicator that she's still alive. And it's the same for the comic book story; most of the time, the characters never stay permanently dead.
But how specifically does Jean find his way in the life of the X-Men? Was her re-emergence supposed to be another big event or does she come back to the X-Mansion saying, "Hey, guys, I'm back and I definitely do not feel murdered anymore" and everything is back in order? Much remains to the imagination that frankly
With regard to Professor X, the fact that he retired to improve the lives of the mutants prevents him from continuing to teach at the Jean Gray School for Gifted Young in Days of the future past. Why should we witness Xavier's decision to withdraw after recognizing all the mistakes he made when it came to advancing his character, when we knew he would finally return to his usual routine. Assuming that Wolverine still joins the X-Men in this revised timeline at about the same time as in the original timeline (ie around 2000), then that means that Xavier will come back to oversee the super-team. mutant heroes in about 10 years.
Certainly, many things can happen in three decades. Maybe Professor X decided that retirement was not for him and he decided to work to improve the lives of the mutants. And I could believe that … if we really saw it happen.
The same goes for Jean Gray; it would be easier to swallow it by joining the X-Men if we saw more of his redemptive bow. Yes, she saved her teammates at the end of Dark Phoenixbut she is still far from resuming a normal life, especially if she is dealing with Phoenix Force.
All this leads me to believe that despite what Simon Kinberg and others have said about the Dark Phoenix was still intended to be the end of the X-Men franchise (not taking into account The new mutants, whose output is still planned), it was originally planned that the film gets a sequel, the one where the arc of Jean de Phoenix would have been properly completed and where Professor X would have returned to action. However, once the purchase of Fox by Disney has been finalized, these plans have been ignored, as Marvel should restart this property to fit into his cinematic world.
What leaves us here, where we have to do a lot of mental effort to explain how the new timeline of X-Men can evolve Dark Phoenix towards the future X-Men: Days of Future Past. Despite Dark Phoenix being an incredibly agile watch, I would have liked a follow up in which all the pieces were well in place for that future we saw in 2014. On the other hand, it might have been better that this franchise ends note with Days of the future past.
